Conventional term for the period stretching between 900 and 700 BC. Its name derives from the painted geometric decoration on the surface of clay pots. It is the period of the Greek colonisation of the Aegean islands and the coastline of Asia Minor. Greek colonies are also founded in South Italy but towards the end of the era. During the Geometric period commerce and arts flourish, the Greek pantheon and alphabet are formed whereas big panhellenic sanctuaries as well as the Olympic games are founded.
